June 23, 2008. ChicagoPoetry.com is proud to reintroduce its "Letters Section". The Letters Section is a place where YOU can publish your thoughts, respond to current issues, review poetry, give your own editorial or commentary, report important poetry news or open a new can of worms. In the past, our Letters Section has served as a forum for exciting debate in the poetry scene. Now is a good time to start it up again.
If you would like to have your letter considered for publication in the ChicagoPoetry.com Letters Section:
--Only letters regarding poetry, literature or art topics will be considered for publication.
--Proof read your letter. Make sure it is well written. Don't just spout a rant and send it; look it over and rewrite it. It will most likely be published exactly the way you send it, so make yourself appear intelligent.
--Know whom your letter is addressed to. Begin your letter with "Dear Chicago Poetry Scene" or "Dear CJ" or "Dear (insert name)" or perhaps "In response to . . ."
--No anonymous letters or letters written under pseudonyms will be allowed. Show some courage and sign your name to your own thoughts.
--If you are sending a letter criticizing something, make sure it is well thought out and is not just an attack. Keep in mind that rebuttals to your comments may be published as well.
--I'm the editor here and I decide what goes in. Ultimately I am responsible for what goes on the site, so if I think your letter is inappropriate or will cause me unwanted aggravation, I reserve the right not to post it.
--Due to the problem of viruses and "spam bots, I can't allow automatic posting in the Letters Section. Letters should be sent by email to chicagopoetry@chicagopoetry.com. If possible, your letter should be in a microsoft word document. Keep in mind that if your letter is pasted in the body of the email, some of your punctuation or paragraph breaks may get lost. I will look it over first before it is published.
--To borrow a quote from Charles Bukowski: "I'm the hero of my shit." I invite intelligent discourse directed at me, but no letters ripping on me (CJ Laity) will be allowed. I used to allow that in the old Letters Section, thinking people would recognize how fair I was trying to be, but one day it dawned upon me that I was simply being masochistic by allowing that type of thing. So if you want to rip on me, use your own blog to do it.
--Letters can be found by clicking on the button that says "Letters" at the left sidebar of ChicagoPoetry.com.
