THE WINNING POEM

Love Letter to My Biographer

I am bringing a piece of paper, a pen and a carrier
pigeon with me so you can write an eye-witness
account and launch it into the night
like fortuneís goat: a set of false teeth

soaking in a glass, the Jonah in my belly
and a heart ordered from a catalogue
of hand-me-downs. Think of the mouth as a formula
perched in the sky, a weathered loon wide open

in the fuddled weeds, and think of the bruise
along my back as a wall through Berlin. See
that trail in the snow and the uncomfortable shoes:
thatís me dancing through a dog year, thatís me

taking the long way here, a pheasant
shrinking away into bones, a rigid complication
outlined in a self-help book, a blossom
ready to fall from a tree along a lamp-lit boulevard.

MORE POETRY

In the Waiting Room at Bernard Mitchell Hospital

The voice in my head can be so different than the one that comes
out of my mouth. I think aubergine, but say eggplant, something
like coming back from Paris but not knowing where to begin.
I had intended to look back and put things together, but it's hard
to speak sympathetically about this moment. I was heartbroken

once I heard the news. I regret never having learned another
language. I wish I knew how to read music. The French know
how to make eggplant sound sexier than it really is, like a secret
meeting to share photocopied pages of a banned novel. There are
notes on survival in the margins of any given season, there are bodies

resembling pictures of hostages found on the roadside
of an occupied country. I say disease, but think quiet place
by the river. There's a narrative I love about a woman who goes
outside to shoot crows that disturbed her sleep. It's a form
of surgery by any other name, an exaggerated appearance

through the fog, a mythology of rooftop dreamers. I say
waiting room, but picture Jeu de Paume, a hotel nestled
between branches of the Seine. I don't remember the last time
I told my wife I loved her. A sign at the door asks that we forgive
the appearance of the lobby as it undergoes renovation.

A Governor for Your Flippancy

Say heart, say heart on your sleeve, say you become
a better person every time you leave this room.

Say you once fell asleep in this chair. Say you dreamt
the one you loved tried to reach out, and say you spent

half your life trying to call back. Admit you hated
the work: start with yourself, start in this space, start

by pulling the curtains back and say heart, say palate,
say purpose, say pith. Say you never cried, admit you came

pretty damn close. Tell it to the crowd, swear to God
you are telling the truth. Say there are hundreds like you

who ache. Say crutch, say cane, say you cannot make it
go away, admit you never had the strength. Feel the weight

on your sleeve. Say heart, say dole into four parts. Look at it
under any light. Say match, say candle, say forty watts.
