Tinterchange
by Nissa Holtkamp
Reviewed by C. J. Laity

There is no doubt in my mind that the freshest, most exciting poetry coming out in this day and age is coming out in the form of self-published or small press titles. The chapbook market allows for a certain freedom and experimentation that mainstream markets avoid. There is likely very few famous poets in American history who didn't begin their career with a self-published title. Within the covers of this kind of underground literature, the real wonders of the poetry world can be found.

Recently I had the pleasure to attend a book release party for Tinterchange, a new collection of poetry written by Nissa Holtkamp. You might recall that Holtkamp was a featured poet in Around the Coyote and also in the Gwendolyn Brooks Open Mic. Awards, and she is an upcoming feature in this year's Printers Row Book Fair. During the book release party, guest poets were invited to read selected pieces from the book. This experiment in juxtaposition was enlightening in two ways: first, we heard Holtkamp's electrically charged verse performed in a variety of reading styles; and second, we heard Holtkamp's own unique voice unavoidably coming through, no matter what that reading style was.

Right then I knew this was one hell of a poetry collection. The poetry in this book ignites from the first page and burns steady like a candle to the last page.

Nissa Holtkamp’s frantic rhythms, which are filled with beautifully raw language, are exhilarating:

I wash my poems on a rock, beat and bleach
The rhythm out. Hang them in the nodding

Sun – shoreline gently knocking like a
Metronome. I knock my poems to the ground

(from "Pome")

yet, despite the sobering language she uses, the result of the language flow is oftentimes the conjuring of a mood of sedation:

Love. Chores, chimes decide civil tasks hourly –
Escape to resume, rename each act. End

Of summertime, provoking autumn air-
Desires relit, memories revised,

(from "Pome")

It is this contradiction, this phantom punch in the face, this healing bruise, which makes Nissa Holtkamp’s poetry unique among the poetry I have read and heard from other Chicago authors.

Holtkamp also masters the ability to remain literary in the strikingly honest language of her deeply personal subject matters:

Obnoxious appeal,
Render others mute.
A distraction, halves

Thirds and quartered, out –
Line and divided.
Overpowered and

Afflicted. Master
And slave, I must crave
Repetition, must

(from "I Have to Ask")

Holtkamp avoids the temptation to become overly confessional, while allowing her psyche to pour onto the page in the form of metaphors and uncanny imagery:

Argument sleeping on our drunken tongues –
That tired and true scam, foxy intention –
You with your mean love, and me with my love,
Baring our deepest failure acumen.

(from "I Didn't, Asshole")

Much of what Holtkamp achieves in her work is due to a complete awareness of her audience, resulting in a confident, though frenzied voice:

Acetate. Taken down, purled,
Flowed in curls. Change, betterment,
Maybe. Circle back. Return,

(from "Tinterchange")

I would describe Tinterchange as a furiously calm underground masterpiece.

Copies of Tinterchange are available for $10 at: Fireside, 5739 N. Ravenswood Ave; MoJoe's Hot House, 2849 W. Belmont Ave; Myopic Books, 1564 N. Milwaukee Ave; Women and Children First; 5233 N. Clark St; or by contacting the artist by clicking here..
