** Art Deuble **

Miles

Nocturnal creatures stir the air
The dew fresh on the ground
My navigator wags her tail
She knows weíre homeward bound

But as she slowly settles in
She senses something wrong
Eyes raised to me as if to say
Thereís something missingÖgone

The minutes slowly melt the hours
Into the break of dawn
The miles they keep a rolliní by
They keep me moviní on

I stop to stretch our weary bones
An image clouds my mind
Engaging me insistently
Iím someone left behind

I need some smokes a tank of gas
I wander Ďround the place
The cashier swipes my credit card
I drift in outer space

Back on the road the hammerís down
Consuming desperate need
Iím passing people left and right
And jackiní up the speed

But little do I realize
If only I could see
This endless trek of grey Iím on
Is all thatís left for me

A sad song fills the radio
The music haunts my soul
And lulls me into yesterday
Lone teardrop sneaks control

The mystery soon overwhelms
Projected foolish pride
This sense of missing Iíve become
Draws deep from my inside

Howíd I forget the innocence
Behind those baby blues
Concealed such cunning thievery
Already paid my dues

The emptiness now washing in
Confirms Iím in the game
She stole my heart in Jacksonville
Iíll never be the same

The miles they keep a rolliní on
Iím lost inside her song
This endless ribbonís leading me
Somewhere I donít belong

I Want To Be

I want to be the burning ember
Glowing in your eyes
The inspiration in the smile you
Never can disguise

I want to be the beating pulse that
Pumps throughout your veins
The bucking bronco snorting fire when
You take hold the reins

I want to be the passioned rush of
Loveís adrenaline
The tempting taboo drawing you to
Revel in its sin

I want to be the one to turn to
When your lights go down
The one to come to when youíre wanting
No one else around

I want to be the ray of sunshine
Waking up your day
The sunsetís warm enveloping each
Time it fades away

I want to be the favored pillow
Of your weary head
The warmer blanket you reach for when
Curling up in bed

I want to be your cloaking shadow
When youíve had enough
The shiny beacon guiding you when
Seas are blowing rough

But most of all I want to be the
Thief who stole your heart
The penance for my thievery
With you Iíd never part

Dreaming

I used to be a dreamer
I donít much anymore
The past has proved
A wiser mood
Much different than before

I had a dream of destiny
A purpose to this world
Was born to fill
A familyís will
Of local prominence

Though silver spooned from date of birth
The dream would come unfurled
A future rife
In fiscal strife
Was not by preference

I had a dream of finding love
Two hearts that beat as one
A special girl
Thatíd make me curl
My toes up when we kissed

I found a love we fell in deep
I thought my search was done
Before I knew
Love played untrue
The mark Iíd widely missed

I had a dream of parenthood
As my fore fathers did
To carry on
When I was gone
Continued lineage

To give a child a better life
Than when I was a kid
Was just a dream
That lost its gleam
A gap too wide bridge

I had a dream of paradise
My life beside the sea
With crashing surf
And sandy turf
The natives clad in tans

But once again another dream
Would slip away from me
As corpírate crawl
And urban sprawl
Soon sullied virgin sands

I donít believe in dreaming
Illusions nothing more
The shadows cast
Upon my past
Have darkened Dreamlandís door

Art Deuble lives in Canton, Ohio. He is a 44 year old blue collar worker who loves to play with words. "I have always been an 'old fashioned romantic' since I can recall," Deuble says. "High school girls swooned over my romantic letters. But life after high school was so much different and my chosen profession left me with little if any time to write. I went for a career change at 37 by enrolling in college. My writing started again, but now with a more serious approach to it. I found poems flowing out of me on a regular basis. This prompted me to take a poetry class, which I must say helped my work tremendously."
