Poetry: Click On The Author's Name Circulation

Now where did I leave that naughty, natty heart o' mine last night?
As I recall, before leaving for the perpetual ball, heart was all
knotted up in family ties.
She wasn't going anywhere until frozen
shots of vodka got her out of there.
New clothes then prompted heart to prancing and by the time you called
she was almost dancing and out of breath,
because when you're inside heart,
there's hardly any room for blood at all.

Heart seemed content when off eyes went to meet your face, keeping
pace with any randy girl in town but then aorta spun around,
the veins unwrapped and Cuban slid,
and before breasts could snatch her up or ribs could pull her in,
heart cleared the bar of better judgment and heart
she went a-hunting.

Now listen little doctors, no chart will ever teach you this but
hearts have fingers, minds and wings,
they ruin precious second chances first, and bite
when teeth are sharpest — from behind.

ELECTRIC THAW

So, February spits us in the eye,
the first-last storm of winter beating early morning traffic to the Loop.
Before the snow, a flood arrives.
When ER's actor Kellie Martin's Lucy Knight dies,
millions in this country cry, me above my chicken soup.

While she dies, I smoke a cigarette or two, dumping the thumping
contents of my real-life neck onto the real-life stump below
the blow of real-life death.
It's a blunt game of chicken with the final act beyond the set.
I sigh into a loop of smoke, a vital outside sign that shows I'm still alive.
Inside this time of electrified squares, no one quivers in a room alone;
we're all waiting for some storm or other to break
and choke us up inside.

My chicken soup whistles and screams atop the stove.

Kellie Martin's merely changed her mind and packed her acting bag,
is well on her way to being a wife by the time Lucy sprints to paradise.
We follow her a ways and wave;
it's such a shame

for such a young girl

in running pants

and independent snarl.

With so many homes open tonight for rent, Kellie Martin truly is a resident.

Living kids float down the stairs to see parents curled like fighting
organs on the couch, amputated from their 3D world.
They're intubated there with shaky hope. They won't unhook the cables
or shut their eyes or give up the ghost until they're sure,
absolutely sure,
that Lucy's gone for good.

When they crack her ribs, suck up the blood, and massage her heart, a
hundred other episodes fly out. One where executive men break down in
loosened tungsten suits. One for women whose children slipped away like
silver mineral boats, pearls scattered too soon from broken ropes.
One where anyone may smack the piñata of grief for a moment,
then sew it back up.
Healing. Simply. With control. That's remote.

All these pinking up faces packing heat from the heart.
It's amazing the snow can come down at all in the midst of all this thaw.

When ER's actor Kellie Martin's Lucy Knight dies,
millions in this country cry.
My soup gets burned,
my snowed-in room alone returns
with whiteout news forever the next day.
The storm comes in like a ratings sweep;
we wipe our eyes and turn away.

DEATH IN CHICAGO
(for Frank Bonomo)

I will just readjust. Assume you moved to Alaska.
Meeting residents there touches somehow on rubbing exotic.

I will pretend you still move around in daily circles, yawn above at the mundane, howl below at
the crowds and the microphone.

I will think you are paying attention
to my life and all its curls.
As spurious as it seems, that mind set will keep you in active verbs.

You died before a beautiful day.

Somewhere, I know you have truly, only now,
checked in to check out all the goodies space and time can be.

How, without the constant prodding of our watches,
they can watch while you unwind.
