Northwestern University is pleased to present Art and Craft: the Northwestern Summer Writer's Conference July 22-24 on the Chicago lakefront campus. The program is for new writers, established writers, and anyone seeking a fuller understanding of the art, craft, and business, of writing. Taking inspiration from the city of Chicago, with its rich cultural offerings, the three-day program will include seminars, faculty and student readings, workshops, and optional manuscript consultations, all designed to give participants new perspectives on their work in the supportive company of other writers. A number of prominent Chicago writers, including Elizabeth Crane, Kevin Guilfoile, Audrey Niffenegger, Aleksandar Hemon and others will lead workshops, read their work, and participate in panels. Individual evening events are free and open to the public, and include the following:

Friday reading by featured author Kevin Guilfoile

Kevin GuilfoileAuthor Kevin Guilfoile will be reading from his work at the 1st Annual Northwestern Summer Writers' Conference on Friday, July 22nd at 7 pm in Wieboldt Hall #107, 339 E. Chicago Avenue, Evanston. Guilfoile’s engrossing debut novel, Cast of Shadows, takes a high-concept look at the age-ole but still provocative question of nature vs. nurture. Kevin Guilfoile has published work in The New Republic, Modern Humorist, the Chicago Reader, and the web and print versions of McSweeney's, among others. His writing has also appeared in Created in Darkness By Troubled Americans: The Best of McSweeney's Humor; May Contain Nuts: A Loose Canon of American Humor; and 101 Damnations: The Humorists Tour of Personal Hells. In 2001, Mr. Guilfoile co-authored (with John Warner) and illustrated My First Presidentiary: A Scrapbook By George W. Bush. The book reached number one on the Washington Post bestseller list and spent eight weeks on the college bestseller list. His first novel, Cast of Shadows, was published earlier this year. Mr. Guilfoile lives in Chicago with his wife and son.

Saturday Performance The Pedagogy of Sound: A Celebration of Poetry and Music

cin salachPoets cin salach and Quraysh Ali Lansana, and multi-faceted musicians Glenda Zahra Baker and Khailfani Rivers, will combine energies to create a special performance celebrating the prosody of music and the sonic textures of verse. All will share recent works, including new collaborative “poemsongs” created exclusively for this event. Though all of these veteran Chicago artists have collaborated with one another in different combinations, never have all four been on one stage at the same time. They will perform on Saturday July 23 at 7 pm, at the Thorne Auditorium on Northwestern University’s Chicago campus, 357 E. Chicago Ave, Evanston.

A fixture of the Chicago and national literary scene, cin salach has always incorporated artistic inventiveness and a strong sense of social consciousness. She is the author of Looking for a Soft Place to Land (Tia Chucha Press), an original member of The Loofah Method, and has worked with scores of musicians and interdisciplinary artists.

Quraysh Ali Lansana is author of three poetry books, including They Shall Run: Harriet Tubman Poems (Third World Press, 2004) a children's book, and editor of five anthologies. He is Director of the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing at Chicago State University, where he is also an Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing. Quraysh serves as Associate Editor-Poetry for Black Issues Book Review, and is an original member of the funky wordsmyths. Quraysh earned a MFA at the Creative Writing Program at New York University.

Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Glenda Zahra Baker has been integrating music, art and culture into a seamless way of teaching young people in the Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Park District sites, and elsewhere for over twenty years. She also works with About Face Theater. In addition to her teaching work, she has collaborated with some of the nation’s most creative musicians, dancers, and playwrights, and has performed at the MCA, the Old Town School of Folk Music, Ravinia, Hothouse, and elsewhere. She is one half of In The Spirit, a storytelling and music duo with Emily Hooper Lansana.

Khailfani Rivers, noted musician and teaching artist, plays almost every instrument known to humankind. Percussion and trap drums, woodwinds, brass, strings, and vocals, Khailfani plays all well. He has displayed his amazing virtuosity at the MCA, the Old Town School of Folk Music, Ravinia, Hothouse, and other venues.
