Maria Mazziotti GillanNew Jersey poet Maria Mazziotti Gillan will be reading in Oak Park on Saturday, June 18th at 3rd Saturday Coffeehouse Open Mic Night. Maria is one of America's foremost experts on multi-cultural poetry. Her poetry that speaks from her Italian-American heritage. Maria has published eight books of poetry, including Where I Come From, Things My Mother Told Me, and her latest book, Italian Women in Black Dresses.. With her daughter Jennifer, she has co-edited three anthologies exploring ethnic identity in America. She is the editor of the award-winning Paterson Literary Review, and the founder of the Poetry Center at Passaic County Community College in Paterson, NJ. The reading will take place at Unity Temple's Gale House, 124 N. Kenilworth Ave (it's a house behind the Unity Temple just off Lake Street). They do a open mic. and feature there on the 3rd Saturday of the month. Doors open for sign-up at 7:30; Open Mic at 8; Feature at 9 (5-minute time limit regardless of genre). Host Charlie Rossiter. Donation: $3-5. Inexpensive refreshments available.

Mark this advanced warning on your calendars. On October 22 there will be "An Evening with ROBERT BLY" at the Gale House. As a poet, critic, translator, and publisher, Mr. Bly has been a leading force in the world of poetry for more than 50 years. He is well known for his books and lectures on the men's movement. He will read from his recent works including his latest book, The Insanity of Empire: A Book of Poems Against the Iraq War. Tickets will be available in early September. This special event will be held the 4th Saturday of the month---no Open Mic on the 3rd Saturday in Oct.

Tom Roby and his son Lem feature for the Mirror Ball (benefit for poetic theater company Smoke and Mirror) at Acme Artworks on Saturday, June 11. The event was a huge success and raised money for this grassroots theater company.

The Mirror Ball ended with some "fire"works.

Poets (Todd Heldt, Larry O. Dean and Charlie Newman) mingle at the Printers Row Book Fair Chicago Poetry Showcase, sponsored by ChicagoPoetry.com.

Lorraine Harrell's debut ChicagoPoetry.com performance at the University Center on Sunday, June 12.

gordon cc liao received thunderous applause for his performance pieces at the showcase.

There was a lot of love at the Printers Row Book Fair (C. J. Laity and Beatriz Badikian).
