Highly Recommended Poetry Theatre

The Cast of SilvaSilva
Caffeine Theatre
Breadline Center for the Performing Arts
1802 W. Berenice Street
Mondays and Tuesdays through June 21, 8 PM, $10

Silva is a joyous celebration of words and art.

Adapting poetry for the theater stage is one of the most difficult things an ensemble can do. Trying to remember deep, metaphorical, abstract lines of verse is a task to challenge even the most seasoned thespian. Doing this in the context of a show without a plot, is even harder. Actors tend to try to "act" the poetry rather than recite it, and as one actor is speaking, the other actors on the stage tend to awkwardly react to what is being said, usually with exaggerated or artificial facial expressions or gestures that don't offer the audience an explanation for why they are there.

Artistic Director Jennifer Shook not only pulls off this challenging task, but she throws in some choreography and projected images as well, making Silva a wonderful multi-media performance art event. Cast members Sara McGuire, Erik Schnitger, Stefanie Neuhauser, Pat Hofmann and Maren Robinson give life to the poetry and they sent my mind swimming with imagery.

The play is a meditation on the tree, developed through the University of Chicago Master of Arts Program in the Humanities, with assistance from the Student Fine Arts Fund. It combines quotes from many poets and well-known personalities, such as Ani DiFranco, T.S. Eliot, Robert Frost, John Keats, Karl Marx, Pablo Neruda, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Dylan Thomas and Virginia Woolf. It is wonderful to explore a single theme throughout the history of literature.

Silva gives the voice of the poet the respect it deserves and ChicagoPoetry.com gives it two big quills up. Click here for more info.

RED ROVER SERIES ON JUNE 18

Marvin Tate The Red Rover Series (readings that play with reading) Experiment #2: A Prayer, will be held on Saturday, June 18, at 7 PM at the SpareRoom, 2416 W. North Ave., and will feature Beth Snyder and Marvin Tate. There is a $3 suggested donation.

Born in Philadelphia, Beth Snyder eventually moved to Berkeley and then spent many years in Santa Fe (her favorite place). In 1978, she received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College and, 23 years later, an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She now works as a senior writer at Northwestern University.

Marvin Tate is a pioneer in the genre of fusing poetry, performance, spoken-word, and music. He is the author of "School Yards and Broken Dreams" and has been featured on NPR's "This American Life", Art-Beat Chicago, Wild Chicago, and has shared the stage with the likes of Amiri Baraka, Nikki Giovanni, Annie Sprinkle, Ken Nordine, Malachi Thompson, and many others.

Red Rover Series is curated bi-monthly by Amina Cain and Jennifer Karmi; for more info e-mail niac1@juno.com
