Poetry Therapists Meet In St. Louis, May 4-8, 2005

The 25th Annual Conference of the National Associaiton for Poetry
Therapy is meeting in the Midwest for the first time in many years. Poetry Therapists use literature and writing for healing and growth. The complete program and conference details is available at poetrytherapy.org. All who are interested in writing, literature and the helping professions are welcome. Volunteers can reduce their conference fees.

February 17, 2005

Dear Friend, NAPT Member:

The 25th Annual Conference of the National Association for Poetry Therapy in St. Louis 2005, May 4-8, is ready for you!

You can find and explore the complete conference program package on our web site: www.poetrytherapy.org.

Our conference is the one opportunity we have as an Association to ALL gather, encourage, learn from one another and go home recharged. These days, such self-care is both personally and professionally wise!

I hope you will read what we have to offer you. Further, I hope you'll meet me in St. Louis..... May 4-8, 2005!

The program is rich with important information and descriptions of all keynotes, workshops, conference activities, entertainment and special
presentations, including both the extended pre and post day trip and workshop offerings. It helps you with hotel information and other such details.

GREGORY ORR, OUR KEYNOTE POET....

As you have surely read in your recent Museletter, this year's keynote poet is Gregory Orr, professor of English at the University of Virginia. Orr is
the author of The Blessing, a memoir, and Poetry As Survival. In both of these books, he shares the story of how writing poetry became for him a healing and redemptive act in the aftermath of searing family tragedy.

His presence and keynote at the conference will surely bring genuine and hard won insight to anyone who has struggled with tragedy and is interested in how, as Orr says, "....poetry makes it possible for people to come to terms with, express and transform their crises..."

AND DEBORAH GRAYSON........KEYNOTE POETRY THERAPIST....

Deborah Grayson, RPT/MS, LMHC, MS of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, is our other keynote speaker. She will bring her 28 years of rich and vibrant involvement with poetry therapy to us. I asked Debbie to say a little about her talk and she wrote:

"The very act of writing is medicine in its purest form and it's an alchemist as well. Most of us can recall that one special poem, story or song that was the elixir for that oozing wound or persistent pain that would not leave. Those healing salves that enable us to courageously shift and venture beyond the edge and deep into the disquieting yet rewarding places that bring us lasting wellness, will be some of the highlights of my keynote."

A WARM WELCOME....

We welcome people in all helping and healing professions -- you'll find at this conference gifted colleagues from medical, educational, therapeutic,
pastoral, artistic and community based professions!

Learning from fine presenters and gaining greater appreciation for the value of poetry and healing along with friendships and exciting network/resource possibilities, these are some of the benefits this conference will offer you.

I want to emphasize: you do not have to be training in poetry therapy to enjoy and benefit from this conference. We welcome all lovers of words! What people enjoy about NAPT conferences is not just the excellent content but the sense of community that is so inclusive.

It's easy to register on line. If you wish you can contact our wonderful administrator, Sheila Dietz (sdietz@assoc-mgmt.com) for more information. We will also be mailing all members a full program in the mail.

I look forward to seeing you in St. Louis for our 25th annual conference!

Warm Regards
John Fox, President NAPT

p.s. We welcome a team of volunteers and will make appropriate arrangements for a reduction in registration fees. Please contact the main office!
