On Saturday, September 18, from 7:30 to 9:30 PM, there will be an Open Mic with featured performer Marty Swisher singing love songs, at Unity Temple in Oak Park, 875 Lake Street (at Kenilworth). $3-$5 donation. Wheelchair accessible. Info at 708-660-9376. Charlie Rossiter hosts.

On Sunday, September 19, from 7 to 9:30 PM, the Two With Water Rx Reading Series at Beauty Bar, 1444 W. Chicago Ave, will present a free event called "Orientation" brought to you by Curbside Splendor Publishing, featuring Kim Bellware, Meredith Carey, Bobby Evers, Benjamin Harmon, Adam Jameson, Sondra Morin and Justin Valmassoi.

Chicago poet Larry Janowski will headline the Tuesday, September 28 TallGrass Writers Guild Open Mic, held 7:30 PM upstairs at The Bourgeois Pig, 738 West Fullerton. There will be an open mic. It's $6.




Hey poets! I may be running for Mayor of Chicago so that I can bring back the CTA bus transfer but that won't keep me from reporting all the juicy Chicago poetry gossip. Here is the latest!

Cram 9 poet Sheila Donovan will have artwork included in the Woman Made Gallery, 685 N. Milwaukee Ave, exhibition called "Mothers" scheduled for November 5 (opening reception from 6 to 9 PM) thru December 23. Right on, Sheila!

On Thursday, September 9, from 7 to 9:30 PM, Green Lantern Gallery, at their new location, 2542 W. Chicago Ave, will present a reading by Gina Frangello. Check out The Parlor Reading Series for more info.

On Saturday, September 11, from 6 to 10 PM, Chicago's most authentic Latina poetry and art organization, Proyecto Latina, will present a free event featuring performance artist Jenny Priego at Carlos & Dominguez Fine Arts Gallery, at Arts of Americas, 1538 W. Cullerton St.

Or check out Qeens of the Quill at Quaker House, 5615 South Woodlawn, at 8:30 PM on Saturday September 11.

Upcoming Tuesday POW-WOWs at Jeffrey Pub, 7041 S Jeffrey, include Deana Dean on Sept. 14; Lucy S on Sept. 21; and Queen HP on Sept. 28. Doors open at 7 with food served and show runs from 8 to 10. It's $5.

On Wednesday, September 15, at 1 PM, Northeastern Illinois University's Golden Eagles Room at 5500 North St. Louis Ave will present Keynote Speaker Luis Alberto Urrea to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month. It's free.

On Saturday, September 18, at 7 PM, Myopic Books, 1564 North Milwaukee Ave, will present the dynamic poetry duo, Adam Golaski and Jennifer Karmin. It's free too.

On Wednesday, September 22, 7:30 to 10 PM, the Revolving Door at Red Kiva, 1108 W. Randolph, is back with open mic and this month's featured writers Erika Mikkalo, Nikki Patin, and Kenyatta Rogers.

The next Rhino Reads event will happen on Friday, September 24, from 6 to 8 PM, at Brother K, 500 Main Street, Evanston, and will feature Donna Vorreyer and Valerie Wallace.

This month's Rhino Workshop at Evanston Library, Room 108 at Church & Orrington in Evanston, will be led by Ruth Goring, on Sunday, September 26, from 1:30 to 4:30 PM. Ruth's topic will be "Breaking Our Readers' Hearts". Bring 17 or more copies (2 page limit) of work you want critiqued. A $5 to $10 donation is appreciated.

Check out the T-shirt Art Harvest Festival on the weekend of Friday, Sept. 24 thru Sunday, Sept. 26, at the American Indian Center, 1630 W. Wilson Avenue, Party for freedom with art and music all weekend long. According to the release: "Fest founder, artist Chris Drew, is fighting for his freedom and yours. The State of Illinois intends to make a political prisoner of the artist for testing the peddler's license law by selling art for $1 on State Street in Chicago. The State has charged him with a 1st class felony (4-15 years in prison) for audio-recording his own arrest."

The Artifice Magazine Issue 2 Release Reading will happen on Friday, October 1, from 7 to 8:30 PM, at The Book Cellar, 4736 N. Lincoln Ave, with readings by Craig Davis, Roxane Gay, Tim Jones-Yelvington, Caroline Picard, Fred Sasaki, Matt Seigel, and David Welch.

Heads up lit fans. On Friday, October 29 at 7 PM, Book Cellar at 4736 N. Lincoln Ave will present Chicago-based, clever estrogen during the fourth-annual Witty Women Writer's Night, featuring Stacey Ballis (Good Enough To Eat), Claire Zulkey (An Off Year), Wendy McClure (The Wilder Life: My Adventures in the Lost World of Little House on the Prairie), and Jen Lancaster (My Fair Lazy).

Don't forget . . .

If you are sick and tired of politicians getting fat while you scratch and struggle then vote for a poet for Mayor of Chicago! I will impose the Englewood Tax in which $5000 is donated to improving the community of Englewood for each cheap ass cinderblock condominium that is built.
