AN OPEN MIC LOOKING FOR POETS

Hello Chicago Poetry calendar listings -

I host a weekly open mic at Uncommon Ground on Devon, every Tuesday evening. While this open mic has traditionally trucked in music performance (primarily acoustic), I'd like to open our doors and extend a welcome to area poets, who might have interest in reciting at this renowned venue. We have a great stage, and cash prizes weekly. So, please list the info as you are able, and please contact me if you require any additional information or details.

Thanks!
Scott Schaefer

TALLGRASS WRITERS' OPEN MIC

Prize winning author Headlines TallGrass Writers' Open Mic - 4/27

On Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 7:30 pm, Mary Kuykendall Weber will read from her book, River Roots (Texas Review Press, 2009), winner of the 2008 George Garrett Prize. Mined from her youth in the Potomac valley, this collection of 38 stories features characters struggling for survival in a world which appears indifferent to their concerns and challenges. The stories of River Roots interrelate for a total view of Potomac River life, then and now. In some ways, the Hampshire Country she grew up in reminds us of Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha County combined with Wendell Berry’s love of land and the family farmer’s respect for it. TallGrass Writers Guild's regularly-scheduled Open Mic follows. Cover charge for the event, held upstairs at The Bourgeois Pig, 738 W. Fullerton, Chicago, is $6 reduced to $5 for students. Info: 219-322-7270.

HAIKU MEETING

You can write haiku in English. Join the Midwest Region of The Haiku Society of America for its second 2010 meeting, from 1:30-4:30 p.m., Saturday, May 15 at Winnetka Public Library, 768 Oak St., Winnetka. The meeting is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required.

At this informal meeting, the content and style of haiku will be reviewed. Haiku is a short, Japanese poetic form of usually three lines and a maximum of 18 syllables. Beginning and experienced haikuists may read their poetry and get it critiqued. Participants without haiku to read may attend to listen to readings.

The Midwest Region of HSA has six workshops and lectures annually, often with noted speakers. HSA is a not-for-profit organization to promote the writing and appreciation of haiku in English. HSA's website is www.hsa-haiku.org

To pre-register or for more information about HSA, contact Charlotte Digregorio, Midwest Regional Coordinator, at 847-881-2664.
