Poetry Gossip: Click On Headlines On Thursday, December 3, Richard Fammerée will present his Future Perfect series at Katerina's Street of Dreams, 1920 W. Irving Park, from 7:30 to 11:30 PM. This month's featured poets will be Quraysh Ali Lansana and Judith Valente, with projected art by Tim Abel and music by Jonathan Tolliver, Chelcie Laggis, and of course Fammerée's own spoken word band, Saint Cloud. These events, sponsored by Fammerée's UniVerse of Poetry (warning, music will play when you click on that), are always recorded for WBEZ's Chicago Amplified. The cover is $7.

On Saturday, December 5, 2009, MARCH ABRAZO PRESS is hosting members of the Latino Writers Collective from Kansas City on their tour to promote their award winning bilingual English Spanish short fiction anthology Everyone is invited to Latte on Lincoln (formerly known as Loose Leaf Tea Loft), 4229 N. Lincoln Ave. FREE admission from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Cumpian describes it: "Fiction and poetry from the heartland, indeed. The variety, the subject matter, and, to this writer, the focus on characterization which, in this case, carries the plot, makes for enjoyable reading. The variety is engaging. Open mike from 6:30-7:00 PM. Meet Linda Rodirguez author of Heart's Migration (Tia Chucha Press, 2009) and three other Kansas City, Missouri poets and writers.

Also on Saturday, December 5, at 9 PM, Viaduct Theatre, 3111 N. Western Ave, will present the Windy City Story Slam Finals, with award winning short story writer Eric May, John Schultz, John Hemingway (grandson of Earnest Hemingway) and 10 finalists battling it out to get to the upcoming Story Slam Championships at the Metro. $5.

And, you heard it here first, I have it through the grapevine that there will be a bon voyage party for Ellen Wadey (who is retiring from the Guild Complex) at California Clipper on December 5 as well. I will report more information when I have it.

On Friday, December 4, from 6 to 9 PM, Young Chicago Authors will host a Holiday Book Bash that will feature over 30 local authors, who will be available in-person to sign purchased books, at John J. Egan Urban Center, 1 E. Jackson Blvd. The evening will feature live interviews with several authors, multi-cultural and multi-generational writers, as well as performances and presentations by Young Chicago Authors' poets and writers. Mike Leonard and Sylvia Ewing will co-host this event, and Elizabeth Bracket, Janice Metzger, Timuel D. Black, Anne Elizabeth Moore, Herb Kent, Bill Ayers, Bob Boone, and Al Gini are just a few of the featured authors who will join in the evening's merriment. Tickets are $50 / $15 for students. Proceeds will benefit YCA. To buy your tickets or to learn about Special Writer's Circle Tickets and Publisher's Circle Tickets, contact Debbi Welch at

Sorry for the late notice. Sunday, November 15, 6 PM, The Whistler, 2421 N. Milwaukee, 6 PM, Orange Alert Reading Series, with Mary Hamilton, Lindsay Hunter, Laura Pearson, Patrick Somerville, and Kyle Beachy, no cover, click here for my take.

On Thursday, November 19, from 7 to 9 PM, the Words That Kill series will debut at its new home at Lilly's Bar, 2513 N. Lincoln Ave, and will feature local, national touring, and award winning comedians and poets, followed by a slam. The theme for this month's event is Philosophy and the featured artists are David Kodeski and Morderchai. Cover is $5 or canned goods donation. 21+

On the other side of town: On Thursday, November 19, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, Poem Present at University of Chicago Social Sciences Tea Room, 1126 E 59th Street, #201, will present Mary Ruefle, who is the author of several volumes of poetry, most recently A Little White Shadow (Wave Books, 2006). Ruefle is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and a Guggenheim fellowship and is a professor at Vermont College's MFA program.

On Sunday, November 22, The Renaissance Society at The University of Chicago, 5811 South Ellis Avenue, 4th floor, presents a poetry reading by Adam Zagajewski at 2 PM. Poet, novelist, essayist Adam Zagajewski is considered one of the “Generation of ’68” or “New Wave” writers in Poland. He has won the Prix de la Liberté as well as fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Berliner Kunstleprogramme. In 2004, he won the biennial Neustadt International Prize for Literature, often viewed as a precursor to the Nobel. He has taught at the University of Houston and at the University of Chicago. Zagajewski writes in Polish and many of his books of poetry and essays have been translated into English: This event is free.

On Saturday, November 21, there will be a free workshop at the Beverly Library, 1962 W. 95th Street, 2:30 PM. Rachel Javellana will lead a workshop where participants will experiment with the endless ways of writing their own 'how-to' poems, taking the reader through steps (how to do something) and/or moving through physical space (how to get somewhere). The workshop will look at a variety of examples that deliver their message using the form of directions.

Are you in Chicago for Thanksgiving? Come out the night before on Wednesday, November 25, for 2nd Story, a night of stories and live music, featuring storytellers Nick Ward, Deb Lewis, and Jen Shin, at Red Kiva, 1108 W. Randolph St., from 7 to 10 PM.
