The friendliest new gay / lesbian poetry venue in Chicago is the Prose, Poetry and Pints series at the Wild Pug, 4810 N. Broadway, a free open mic. that is "straight friendly" and happens on the second Thursday of the month at 8 PM. You don't have to be queer (just open minded) to read at the Pug. I was asked to feature on November 12 and I have to say, I haven't had this much fun at a poetry show in quite a while. It's like a totally flaming Weeds and it's two doors down from The Green Mill. Here are some photos that I took.

"Tavern Boy" Craig Rathwell (behind the bar) read naughty haikus between sets of poetry and prose.

Drew Ferguson is Chicago's most hilarious queer poetry host.

Drew gave out free drinks and prizes to just about everyone in the room. I got two free drinks for featuring and I could have had another one if I wanted to share a "confession." I also won a $25 gift certificate to Borders from the grab bag. No, these weren't bribes; they gave out stuff like this to all the poets, even to the open mic poets.

Anthony Flemming read a very serious piece of prose.

This DEVIANT DYKE will feature next month at Wild Pug and also for the Beast Woman Series at Prop Theatre.

Drew has some fun at the confessional. Check out Prove Confusion.

A local author reads from her book in the open mic. The cool thing is, the open mic happens AFTER the featured poets, so features always know they are going to have an audience.

The evening ends with a humorous piece of exaggerated non-fiction about "vanity".
If you are looking for an open minded poetry venue with a sense of humor, look no farther than the Wild Pug. This venue is quickly becoming the hippest queer open mic in Chicago. Check it out. You'll have a blast.
