Poetry Gossip: Click On Headlines

And then on Tuesday, November 10, from 4:30 to 6 PM, there will be a Teen Urban Haiku and Renga Poetry Workshop with Regina Harris Baiocchi at the Whitney M. Young Library at 7901 S. King Drive. Participants are invited to read one poem up to two minutes long during the open microphone. Teens ages 13 and up are welcome to participate! Phone: 312-747-0039.

On Thursday November 5, 6 PM, The Oak Park Arms at 408 S. Oak Park Ave in Oak Park. (708-366-0544) will present a reading of light verse—humorous poems by X. J. Kennedy, Tom Disch, John Updike, Gail White and more—read by the staff of Light Quarterly, which claims to be the only print magazine that regularly publishes light verse.

On Friday, November 06, at 7 PM, there will be a fall issue Fifth Wednesday Journal Release Party at The Book Cellar, 4736 N Lincoln Ave. Fifth Wednesday is a literary print journal published out of Lisle, Illinois twice a year.

On Sunday, November 8, from 2 to 3 PM,, the Chicago Humanities Festival will present Michael Salinger: Well-Defined, An Irreverent Poke at Vocabulary Definitions, at Francis W Parker School, 2233 N Clark Street. Adults: $5.00, Educators & Students: FREE Michael Salinger delivers his playful poems and also will discuss his work on stage and in the classroom as a literary advocate and poetry champion. Michael Salinger is a poet, fiction writer, and performer. His work has appeared in dozens of literary journals published across the US and Canada and he is the author of Stingray and Well Defined - Vocabulary in Rhyme, among others. An eight-time captain and coach of the Cleveland Slam team that represented the city at the National Poetry Slam competition, he is also the founder and director of the Nova Lizard project, and chief facilitator of the teen writing and performance program at Cleveland's Playhouse Square Foundation

The Naperville Writers Group continues its 2009 Literary Series with a reading by Ruan Wright on October 30, 7 to 9 PM at Barnes and Noble at the Promenade Center in Bolingbrook, 631 E Boughton Road. The event is free and open to the public. If you would like to read, please arrive early and sign up. Ruan Wright has recently been published in Radix, Art Times, Winhover, and The Taj Mahal Review. Her work has received awards and recognition from The Poets and Patrons of Chicago, the ISPS, ChicagoPoetry.com and the CNW/FFWA. She is Assistant Fiction Editor for the Fifth Wednesday Journal. Moon Journal Press published Ruan Wright's first collection of poems, thought-fish, in summer 2009. She can be contacted through her web site at PenRuan.com.

Chicago poet Jenene Ravesloot will be throwing a release party for her jazz CD, White Narcissus, on October 21st at Katerina's, 1920 West Irving Park Road. The event runs from 6:30 to 8 PM. Free. Please drop in and hear some original jazz art songs, with Juli Wood on sax, Jordan Baskin on Piano, Petra Van Nuis, vocals, Matt Fergusen, Bass, Brian Schwab, trumpet and Mike Schlick on drums.

On Saturday, October 24 at 7 PM, March Darin, Kathleen McElligott, Whitney Scott and other area authors present readings from Fearsome Fascinations, 13th anthology in Outrider Press’ respected “Black-and-White” series published in affiliation with TallGrass. Fearsome Fascinations will be available for purchase and book signing following the presentation. This program, free and open to the public, is at Borders Books in Oak Park, 1144 Lake Street, 708-386-6927.

Also on Saturday, October 24, the Archer Heights Public Library at 5055 S. Archer Ave will present a reading by Adam Lizakowski at 3 PM. Adam Lizakowski is a renowned Polish-American poet, novelist, essayist. Mamy critics in Poland consider him to be one of the best-known Polish poets living abroad. Adam Lizakowski has lived in the United States since he immigrated from Poland in 1981. He is the author of more than a dozen books of poetry, the most recent being Chicago: City of Belief which was chosen by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Polish Division as the 2008 book of the year.

Also on Saturday, October 24, Rock the Independent Vote! at Weeds, 1555 N. Dayton, 8 PM to Midnight.

On Thursday, October 29, from 5 to 6:30 PM, Kevin Coval will lead a Teen Poetry Writing Workshop at Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S. State Street for the CityVerse program. A short performance of poems will be followed by an hour-long workshop intended to give writers confidence to tell their own stories and add to or begin their own portfolios. Selected readings will include the topics of hip-hop, love and urban living, love of Chicago, coming of age and Jewish identity.
