Poetry: Click On The Author's Name The Death of the Cool: Elegy for the Mark Horne Memorial at the Hideout by Vittorio Carli (December 18, 2001)

Never knew him very well
Never knew what went through his head
But I know he always wore a leather jacket
And he walked with a kind of a swagger
He could've been in a long lost Edward
Hopper painting next to Elvis and Bogie
He epitomized the cool of a bygone era
Which never went out of fashion
He was boisterous, blunt, and confident
With women, but his face was
Sometimes tinged with melancholy
And the lines on his face
Bespoke world weariness
And he often seemed a
Little like a ghost
lost and out of time.

Never knew him very well
But I would see him around
We would speak briefly at gatherings
And parties held by mutual friends
Then one night around three weeks ago
We had our first and last real conversation.
We talked about women we knew
The ins and outs of family
His marriage and divorce
And who had the real power
In male/female relationships
And how I was trying to change my life.
I felt a little less
Burdened afterwards
Thought we were on the
Road to becoming friends.

So I was surprised when I got the news
Had no idea he had hellhounds on his tail
or Antonian demons shaking his bed
I mean we all have our problems and tribulations
And sometimes bad checks get cashed
But it all seemed like a bad (simple) answer
To an unspoken ( a complex) question.
But I have no right to judge
I only knew the man of myth
Rumors, and bullshit
The guy in the painting
That was never found
Didn't know the real man
But the room on Canalport
Will be a little more still and somber
Without the sound of his laughter.

Ruth at the Ever So Secret Order of the Lamprey, October 7, .2001

Long haired
-Struts in,
Tall boots
And a mauve
Leather jacket
Proud as Nico,
Amongst the art pieces,
Remnants of a dead civilization,
Reminders that art once existed.

Big eyed, full of wonder
This quiet, bubbly, effervescent
Buoyant, living spirit of the '60s,
Reveals herself in conversation as
Eagerly and joyfully as a child
Unwrapping a present at Christmas.

The New Math?

(for Jim Lysaught and Amiri Baraka)

My whole life's
been a series of
Missed opportunities
Inflated hyperboles
Failed similes
Inappropriate analogies
I see hear feel touch taste smell synatheseia
Everywhere I go and it's driving me crazy
Does one plus one still equal one?
Can two minus one still equal two?
Nothing adds up
There is no center to hold
The damn's about to burst
The damn's about to burst
Move the grain
Move the grain
The British are coming
The British are coming
The French are already here.
Jacques Dairy was
Never my dada.
New historical
Serves no function
It's a literary pleasure
Chase that meaning
Chase your tale
Chase the meaning
Kill the whale
Moby means Dick
To the new fisherpeople.
But he still
Gets some "Play."

Suddenly the Pipes of Pan!
(for Effie Mihopoulos)

CD player clicks open
button is pushed
audience sighs
expecting transformation

Soft pipe begins
gentle as a breeze
or rabbit footfalls
then it all changes.

Tribal drums fade out
then return just
Like the here and now
--only illusion
Drums begin again, slowly at first
then pick up, pounding furiously
--background sounds like wailing
banshees in the distance. Like
sounds before time was time.
Supple grass skirt wearing Jajoukas
materialize from hazy, nebulous past
swaying, swaying furiously to the rhythm,
swaying furiously to the rhythm, kicking
their legs, swinging their arms
Shaking their butts to the rhythm.

Goat headed deity
father of skins
father of fear
appears hoping
he can be redeemed
in the summoning.

Can ecstatic dancing / mental hygiene
cure minds grown too modern to feel?
Not now. Poet is devoured
whole by the audience,
and they spit out the bones
for the billionth time
Goat headed deity
herder of sheep
father of skins
father of fear
falls back into
slumber never
to be reborn.
CD player clicks closed
button is pushed
audience sighs in
Like balloon that's
Losing its air.
